Namibia Overland Safari

Baobab tree

Baobab tree

from Windhoek to Windhoek

This tour covers all of the highlights of central and northern Namibia, but also concentrates on "off the beaten track" routes and attractions. The Namib Desert is the land of unrelenting sun, where the ground seems to beg the heavens for rain, and the landscapes stretch uninterrupted for hundreds of kilometres on end. A region where one gazes in wonder and amazement at the animals and plants that survive in this harsh environment. Flexibility, a willingness to participate and an awareness of the elements are essential in order to get the most out of this tour.

This tour departs from Windhoek every second Tuesday.
Pre- and post-tour overnights can be arranged.

ITINERARY:

(subject to change without prior notice)

Day 1: Windhoek - Namib

Leave Windhoek at 9:00, and go south to Rehoboth. Enter the true Namib, travelling to the "Desert Camp" adjoining the Namibrand Nature Reserve. We camp on our own in the wilderness. Only the desert landscapes, rocky mountains and towering dunes keep us company. The sunset over the desert is something to remember fondly. Enjoy a traditional meal under the clear night skies before falling asleep to the sounds of the wild. D

Day 2: Namib Desert

The "Desert Camp" is nestled against a towering rock outcrop. It is situated within a protected and restored wilderness onto which game has been re-introduced. During your stay here, enjoy extensive guided walks and game drives both during the day and at night in order to better understand the desert fauna and flora. B/L/D

Day 3: Sossusvlei

Afterbreakfast, make a short morning walk. Then, pack up and continue through the desert to the Sesriem Canyon and the spectacular Soussusvlei dunes. Enter the dunes by 4x4, and spend some time climbing these awesome dunes. Tonight, we will camp wild in the desert. B/L/D

Days 4-5: Swakopmund

Today, we visit the Namib Naukluft Park with its dramatic Lunar Landscape, and the ancient Welwitschia plants. From here, continue to the coastal town of Swakopmund where we will spend two nights in the centrally located, comfortable "Swakopmund Inn". Stroll through this holiday town and its surrounds, and enjoy an evening meal at a local restaurant (own expense). Optional activities in Swakopmund include Quad Biking, Sand Boarding and Sky Diving. B/L/D

Day 6: Skeleton Coast - Spitskop

Our journey takes us up the barren Skeleton Coast, scene of many shipwrecks (hence the name). Our destination is the Seal Colony at Cape Cross where thousands of Cape Fur Seals can be seen ashore. Our next stop venturing inland  is at the impressive Spitskop. Here, we will camp wild amongst the boulders at the base of this unusual granitic outcrop. With a little luck, you will see the endemic colorful Lovebirds. B/L/D

Day 7: Twyfelfontein - Palmwag

Drive on to make a stop at the Organ Pipes and the bushman Rock Engravings at Twyfelfontein. After that, we reach Damaraland and cross the Grootberg. Tonight, we camp at the oasis of Palmwag. We hope to see the rare Desert Elephants up close today, because Palmwag is one of a few waterholes used by these magnificent animals. B/L/D

Days 8-9: Epupa Falls

We make our way north to the Angolan border, travelling through the heart of the Kaokoveld today. We will camp for two nights at a community project on the banks of the Cunene river at the spectacular Epupa Falls. Take your time to explore the area surrounding the falls. This region is inhabitated by the nomadic Himba people, a tribe that live in this inhospitable region and wander with their livestock in search of grazing. During our time here we hope to get in contact with some of them. B/L/D

Days 10-11: Etosha NP

During these days we will conduct extensive game drives within the Etosha National Park. We will spend two nights here in search of the big game that this park is so well known for. Spend one evening at a floodlit waterhole, watching the many animals that come down to drink. One night, dine at a camp restaurant (own expense). B/L/D

Day 12: Etosha - Windhoek

After breakfast, we leave the Park to return to Windhoek. We expect to arrive back in the capital in the late afternoon. B/L
